Life: . Was an under-carter on farm before enlisting at Gosport [service number 29981]

Killed in action , 5 Jan 1918 (aged 23–24)]

Private Ernest Cobb  The Manchester Regiment

Life:  Was a labourer before enlisting at Gosport 8/07 [10279  ]

Killed in action , 24 Oct 1914 (aged24) .

 Buried   no known grave. Commemorated Menin Gate

Major Henry Lennox Napier  The Sherwood Foresters

Life:     Fought in Boer War.  Great-grandson of 8th Lord Napier.  Brother to Admiral William Rawdon Napier

Killed: Drowned17 Nov 1915 age 39 on HM Hospital Ship Anglia when hit mine one mile off Folkstone.

Buried  No known grave. Commemorated Holybrook War Memorial, Soton and Radley College WM

Catisfield connection: son of late Commander Lennox and Ellin Napier of Catisfield Cottage. Wife was Ellin Mathias of Catisfield Lodge.

 

Major Glendower George Ottley   Kings Own Yorkshire L Infantry/ Royal Fusilers?

Life:     Served in India and the South African War

Killed in action : 3 Sep 1916

Buried/Commemorated     Thiepval Memorial, The Somme.

Catisfield connection: Husband of Florence Mary Ottlry, “Clanconnel”, Catisfield.  Coincidentally  their  daughter Diana is commemorated on the Catisfield Memorial Hall WW2 plaque.

Private John Frank Price    Royal Army Service Corps / Border Regiment

Life:    A baker in Portsmouth  before enlisting at Gosport    [SR04598 / 39433].

Killed in Action:  4 Nov 1918 age 27 at Forest of Mormal on The Somme just a week before the end of the war. His mother received the news on Armistice Day as Titchfield’s blls were ringing to celebrate  the peace.

Catisfield connection:  son of the late John Wilmott & Mary Price of 5 Fairthorne Cottages (Catisfield Lane)

  Commander Richard Townsend  Royal Navy

Life:     Great-Grandson of the 3rd Baronet Denny, of Castle Moyle, Co. Kerry

Killed in Action:  Drowned 31 May 1916  age 36 when  HMS Invincible was sunk at at the Battle of Jutland

Buried  No known grave.

Life:    Was a domestic gardener  before enlisting at Gosport 8/07 [254269  ]

Killed: Died 1 Mar 1917 age 37  from pneumonia at No 6 Hospital Rpuen.

Buried/Commemorated  at St Sever Rouen.

Catisfield connection: Wife Laura Bertha lived Catisfield. Son of  late George and  late Mary Ann Wingate, of 3 Stoney Bridge Cottage Catisfield (?).
