HEARTH TAX RETURNS, OR CHIMNEY MONEY.

Catisfield Tithing:

taken from FP&P Book VIII p15.

Hearth Tax - Made in 1662 for Charles II to govern. Commonwealth Taxes had been lost and there were debts accrued in his exile. It was sanctioned by Parliament in Spring 1662 and levied on all Households rated in the Poor Books as worth more than 20/-pa. or more,. The tax was 1/- for every hearth os Settling Days (Lady Day and Michaelmas). The first collection was at Michaelmas 1662. (PRO E/129/176/569)

Fareham comprised 8 Tithings, containing 273 households.

comment:
So there were 12 households with chargeable hearths, and 6 to 8 with non-chargeable hearths (William Slawter & Potter appear in both lists - not sure why).
So the population was c. 75 people

Fareham had 142 chargeable hearths (+42 not chargeable). Titchfield had 278 (+25)
To be exempt you basically had to be poor - eg inhabit a house worth less than 20 shillings a year
